In addition to Iwo Jima, he took part in the Occupation of Japan with the 5th MarDiv. Pfc Eng was discharged on 17 May 1946. He settled in Milan, Ill. and passed away on 7 December 1997.

I received the following in an e-mail from Pfc Eng's son, Thomas:

"[Dad] was wounded during the landing at Iwo Jima (5th wave on Green Beach). While at Camp Tarawa my father had a tattoo of the Marine Corps "Globe and Anchor" put on his upper left arm. He was shot right through the middle of the tattoo. They sent him to a hospital ship for a few days, then back to the battle...My father never had any problem with his arm, but you could always see the scar in the middle of the Globe."
