The Commandant's birthday message is a tradition that first began in 1921. LtGen John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant, established the practice of a message to be read to Marines everywhere in the world. The message encapsulated the recent deeds of Marines, and tied them together with those who went before. Succeeding Commandant's have carried on the tradition. Today, both the original and the current Commandant's messages are read at all posts and stations of the Corps in a fitting ceremony on or near the Corps' birthday. The first CMC's message was issued in Marine Corps Order 47, dated 1 November 1921. Below is the text of this message.
