I received the following in an e-mail from Alda Devine: [H]ere's a synopsis of what happened to me after Bougainville. While setting up camp on the 'Canal I developed symptoms of moo-moo [filiriasis]. I was surveyed stateside to the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, Ca. After a couple of months of getting stuck with a razor blade in a cork with inconclusive findings, I volunteered for active duty. I guess my service record warranted assignment near home, for I was assigned to the Naval Torpedo Plant in Alexandria, Va., my home town. After a stint there I was shipped back to the Pacific Theater, I think to rejoin the 3rd MarDiv. However, I was pulled from the replacement pool and assigned tio the Pearl Harbor Marine Depot till war's end. I was honorably discharged in Feb '46.

He landed on Bougainville Nov 1, 1943 after enlisting Aug 1942 and shipping out for Auckland in Feb, 1943 with Division HQ aboard the SS Lurline.
