He joined the Marine Corps in World War II and served as a Judge Advocate General with the 1st Marine Division. Colonel Scherr was a three war career Marine who retired in 1969. After retirement, Col Scherr worked for the US Postal Service until his untimely death in 1984. Like so many of America's heroes, his final resting place is in Arlington National Cemetery. early 1943.

After the brutal campaign for Guadalcanal, the 1st MarDiv was sent to Melbourne for rest and recuperation. The division was shot through with malaria. The Old Breed spent almost a year in Australia. Many of the Marines felt it was the best time of their lives.
