The pictures on this page are of Cpl William "Hank" Stuart and his buddies in the 81mm Mortar Platoon, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines. Cpl Stuart, from Birmingham, Alabama, enlisted on 2 Jan 1942. He fought on Guadalcanal with the 1st Marine Division He was wounded there on 12 Sep 1942. In addition to the 'canal, Cpl Stuart participated in the campaigns for Cape Gloucester and Peleliu. He also contracted malaria while in the Pacific.

Cpl Stuart rotated home in November 1944 and then served as a drill instructor at Marine Barracks, Parris Island until his discharge on 20 Sep 1945. After the war, he worked in a foundry and as a police officer. He suffered his first heart attack at age 39 and died at age 62. All the pictures are courtesy of Cpl Stuart's son, Tommy.
