(left) Cpl Richard Jessor, USMCR, in 1945 at home after Iwo Jima, where he was wounded in combat. During the war, Cpl Jessor served as an intelligence scout in HQ Co, 1st Bn, 25th Marines, 4th MarDiv. After the war, Cpl Jessor went to school under the GI Bill. He received a Ph.D. in psychology from Ohio State University in 1951.

Professor Jessor is Distinguished Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder. One of the founders of the university's Institute of Behavioral Science in 1959, he served as its Director from 1980 to 2001 and currently directs its Health and Society Program. For the past fifty-five years, he has also been a professor in the CU Department of Psychology; he is the longest-serving faculty member at the university.

(left) Among his many accomplishments, Professor Jessor is an avid mountaineer. This photo shows him while climbing Ojos del Salado, the world's tallest volcano. Also, he's completed numerous marathons.
