WORLD WAR II GYRENE PHOTO ALBUM

Company L, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 6th Marine Division

part 1

The 4th Marines' tent camp was located on Guadalcanal's north shore. When the Regiment took over this camp, Marines had to hack their company streets out of the jungle. Located near the Tassafaronga River outlet, the camp was austere and lacking in facilities.

Using GI issue soap, buckets and scrub brushes, Love Company Marines wash their laundry on Guadalcanal. For the vast majority of Marines in the Pacific, hand washing was the only way to clean dirty clothes.
One of Love Company's Marines cuts his buddy's hair. Each company was issued two sets of hand-operated barber clippers and scissors.Although World War II hair regulations were not as stringent as the modern Marine Corps, keeping a neat and groomed appearance was still important.

Radio operators checking their sets. The low lying area in the background did not have tents erected in it because it would have been prone to flooding in heavy rain storms.
One of Love Company Marines rakes the dirt in the company street. Even in far flung camps, leaders enforced high standards of police, not only for sanitation, but also to keep their men busy.

A Marine walks down the company street to his tent. Outside of his tent is a machine gun tripod and an ubiquitous bucket. In the Marine Corps, buckets were used for many roles, including, but not limited to; trash cans, seats, weapons cleaning, doing laundry, whore's baths, mail receptacles, etc. The informal nature of life on the 'canal is evident in this picture.

The drain running down the length of the street is evidence of how much rain fell on Guadalcanal.
