WORLD WAR II GYRENE PHOTO ALBUM
Company L, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 6th Marine Division
part 3
In the foreground is Ralph "Slim" Weaver from Illinois. He was wounded on Okinawa.
Slim is carrying his mess gear. Marines in the Pacific ate a steady diet of B-rations when they were in camps. These dehydrated rations were reconstituted with water and cooked in field kitchens. Marines hated "B's", which were monotonous and tasteless.
In combat, C-, D- and K-rations were issued. These pre packaged rations were not intended for prolonged consumption, but Marines sometimes ate them for long time periods.
Horace "Chubby" Frost from California. Like many of Ray's buddies, he was wounded on Okinawa. |
Two of Ray's buddies clowning for the camera. Playing with knives and bayonets was a regular theme in photographs sent home in World War II.
For comparison, see the picture of Les Groshong and his buddy horsing around with their rifles at Radio School in San Diego from 1941. |
Two Love Company Marines in front of their tent
on Guadalcanal. The recreational facilities on the 'canal were spartan at best. Marines often had to figure out ways to have fun. These guys appear to
be doing just that. |
Some of Love Company's Marines having fun on the company street. The Marine on the left holds an M1919A4 .30 caliber machine gun. The Marine in the ceneter holds a bazooka. Chubby Frost, at right, smiles broadly while holding a BAR.
The washed out background in this picture is probably from the glare off the water of Sealark Channel.

Lenyel "Shorty" Sumnler of East St. Louis, Mo. He was wounded on Guam and returned to duty.
Ray's best buddy, Jack Starofsky of Moline, Ill. After the war, he was active for many years in the Marine Corps League and Toys For Tots. Jack is survived by a large family who proudly remembers his service to the Nation.
