Ed Miller of Sulphur, Oklahoma, joined the Marine Corps in October 1941 and went to boot camp in San Diego. He was in Platoon 150 and graduated in December 1941 . The picture of Ed at left was taken right after he graduated.

In March 1942 Ed shipped out to American Samoa for duty with George Battery, 7th Defense Battalion. He was sent to Auckland, New Zealand, in July 1943, where he was assigned to G 2/3, 3rd MarDiv.

The photo at left shows Ed with Odet, a friend he met in New Zealand.

After arriving on Guadalcanal Ed's outfit continued its intensive pre-combat training program. Unfortunately, he contracted a severe case of malaria on the 'canal. In November 1943 Ed was shipped stateside for treatment and transferred to the Naval Hospital, Santa Cruz. He received an honorable discharge in mid-1944 and returned home.
