WORLD WAR II GYRENE PHOTO ALBUM
Page 3

The photos on this page are from the album of Les Groshong. Les took them in late 1942 while he served with the 8th Marines on Guadalcanal. The photos are a unique record, because most Marines were prohibited from owning cameras, especially in combat zones. Fortunately, Les disobeyed this order, & we have his photos today.

a captured Japanese helmet and machine gun. Three of the Marines
still have the M1917A1 helmet, and all are wearing the summer service
uniform. The Marine sitting in the center holds an M1 rifle, which is
interesting since the Corps had not yet begun issuing this weapon.

The thick jungle and rugged terrain is evident in this photo.

The Marines of 3/8 called this path, "Main Street."
