LtCol John Butler and 1st Battalion, 27th Marines

Acknowledgements and Bibliography

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The telling of this story started one day in January 2005 when John A. Butler, Jr., posted a tribute to his father on the guest book of my web site, World War II Gyrene. John’s pride in his dad shone through and we began a correspondence that has grown into friendship. As I learned more about LtCol Butler, his family and the brave men he served with, I felt compelled to somehow capture a part of their story.

Through John, I became acquainted with author and World War II veteran Chuck Tatum, who served in B 1/27. Chuck was an eyewitness to Gunny Basilone’s death and has been a major source of information for this work. More than any other person, Chuck has documented and verified a great deal of information on his outfit and brought a unique insight to this work.

Craig Leman, who lives not far from me in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, served alongside the Marines of 1/27 and endured his own ordeal on Iwo Jima. He has been a mentor to me and an astute observer of his experiences. His sharp reading of my drafts has helped to produce a more accurate finished product.

Iwo Jima was the most heavily photographed battle of World War II. The Marines who shot camera film on the battlefield left an amazing record of daily life and death. Working under extreme conditions with primitive equipment, they were both observers and participants in one of the seminal events in American history. I hope I have done justice to their achievements in my photo selection.
