The 1st Battalion, 27th Marines in World War II

This is the history of the 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division in World War II. A gallant band of brothers, 1/27 fought in the campaign for Iwo Jima, suffering 790 Marines killed or wounded. The battalion commander, LtCol John A. Butler, USMC, died in battle leading his Marines. To those who fell, and the ones they left behind, this story is humbly dedicated.
