HBO has demonstrated a strong track record of great historical mini-series over the years. Time and again, the network produces programs with very high production values, a commitment to good storytelling, and historical authenticity. As a viewer of many of their shows, I can't help but feel that the management at HBO is willing to spend whatever it costs to tell the right story. Their mini-series Band of Brothers set a benchmark for all other World War II-themed programming. Now, HBO shines a spotlight onto the Pacific with a 10-part mini-series entitled simply, The Pacific. The executive producers are Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman. The Pacific is produced jointly by Playtone and Dreamworks. Many of the executives and crew members who worked on Band of Brothers return on The Pacific to add their expertise to this theater of war. Captain Dale Dye, USMC (ret) is the head military advisor, and the historical advisor is Hugh Ambrose, son of the late Stephen Ambrose, who, in many ways, initiated the modern concept of memory on the World War II-era. This mini-series tells the story of the war in the Pacific through the experiences of four main characters. They are John Basilone, Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and Sidney Phillips. Many other Marines and supporting people appear, among them Chesty Puller, Chuck Tatum, Andrew Haldane, etc. Most of the emphasis is on campaigns of the First Marine Division, although John Basilone's role in the Battle of Iwo Jima is also spotlighted. WW2 Gyrene will review each episode of HBO's The Pacific, placing the events on the mini-series in a historical framework, and offering insight on the characters, and the world they lived in. Visit HBO's site on The Pacific for extensive information on the series, cast and crew. To purchase the DVD set of The Pacific, visit the WW2 Gyrene bookstore.
